The advancements in printing have been numerous throughout many years. The laser printer was invented in 1969 at Xerox by a researcher named Gary Starkweather. He had an improved and functional printer working and printing around 1972. The idea came about by modifying an existing xerographic copier. Starkweather disabled the imaging system, created a spinning drum with 8 mirrored sides and focused a laser on the drum. Light from the laser bounced off the spinning drum, sweeping across the page as it traveled through the copier. The hardware was completed rather quickly but the software and control interface took much longer. The first laser printer was the IBM 3800 in 1976, typically used for high volume printing like invoices and mailing labels. It was a very large device but can be accurately named the beginning of laser printers.
The cartridges in most of these printers are usually quite easy to replace. The laser printer cartridge is meant to make things much easier and allow for quick replacement and overall efficiency for the printers they come in. The only issue is, they are usually quite pricey and you are stuck buying the same brand that printer was made by. The laser printer cartridge is not interchangeable, in most cases if you have an HP printer, you'll need an HP printer cartridge.
The difference between ink cartridges and the laser cartridge is in the material used. InkJet printers use liquid while the toner cartridge used in a laser printer is powder. Manufacturers use various polymers and formulas to produce a slab of toner, then pelletize or break it and turn it into a fine powder. The advantage in using toner ink cartridges is the much more extensive use you get out of laser printers and toner itself over liquid ink.
